Over 60,000 students from Delhi government schools, who had recently failed in their Class 10 Board exams, will be readmitted and special classes will be held for them, chief minister Arvind Kejriwal announced on Tuesday, in his address at the Chhatrasal Stadium on the occasion of I-Day.

This year in Delhi, 64,570 students – many of whom had failed twice or more in Class 9 – gave the Class 10 board exams through CBSE Patrachar (correspondence). However, only 1,654 students cleared the exam.

Kejriwal said that the no-detention policy had ruined the education system. “Previous governments introduced no-detention policy till class 8. When students took their first exam in Class 9, they failed . They appeared through open school in Class 10 and 60,000 students failed,” he said.

“I assure all 60,000 students who failed in Class 10 that they will be readmitted and special classes will be held for them.”

Around 25,000 out of the 60,000 students have reappeared for compartment exams already and are awaiting their results. Describing the contract system of employment as ‘exploitative’, Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal also said that he would strive to abolish the contractual system in regular employment.

“There are two types of contractual labour. One, who are engaged for few days in sectors like construction, the other who are hired in regular jobs and employed for 365 days. We will strive to do away with the contractual system in regular employment,” said Kejriwal.

He added that despite the AAP government revising minimum wages by about 37 per cent last year, the contractual employee are yet to receive any benefits. Kejriwal also, without taking any names, took a dig at Haryana BJP chief Subhash Barala over his son’s involvement in an alleged stalking case and said that women were unsafe even 70 years after independence.

Kejriwal said a politician’s son, guilty of such crimes, should be awarded double the punishment, he added. The chief minister also said that the government will soon come out with a detailed plan to check the spread of vector-borne diseases.

“In the next 10 days, we will come out with a detailed plan to tackle dengue and chikungunya in Delhi, ” he said.
