Bomb hoax at Delhi High Court

A phone call about a bomb being planted at the Delhi High Court premises on Thursday morning sent security agencies in a tizzy.

A thorough search over the next few hours and intial investigations later, the police determined the call to be a hoax.

The phone number from which the call was made to the police control room at 10.54am was registered in the name of one Deepak, a resident of Baghpat in eastern Uttar Pradesh. But his phone call location showed that the call was made from east Delhi’s Tahirpur.

The Delhi Police quickly coordinated with their counterparts in Baghpat and conducted a search at Deepak’s house, where the man was found to be absconding.

His family members claimed that Deepak was an alcoholic and had randomly left home a few weeks ago. Sources suspect that the bomb threat may have been made by Deepak in an inebriated state.

At Delhi High Court, meanwhile, police and other security agencies began a search operation after the call was made. As per the caller’s threat, bombs had been planted inside the court complex and blasts would occur within an hour of the call.

Police sources said that standard operating procedures were followed.

The Delhi Police Commandos of the Quick Reaction Teams, the bomb disposal squads and fire tender vehicles used sniffer dogs to go about their search. The court complex was thoroughly searched over the next couple of hours before the call was declared a hoax.

Court proceedings, meanwhile, were not halted as the search operations went on.
