Lieutenant-governor Anil Baijal has asked for a standard operating procedure for dust control measures at the construction sites of the city.

In a meeting chaired by the L-G at Raj Niwas on Thursday, the New Delhi Municipal Council has been tasked to prepare an SOP for dust control at construction sites and other related parameters in consultation with Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) within two weeks.

“This could be uniformly adopted by all municipal corporations and other construction agencies. The Hon’ble L-G stressed that such an SOP should be feasible and enforceable,” an official present at the meeting, attended by representatives of all government departments and civic agencies concerned, to review the condition of air pollution in the city, said.

Construction dust affects breathing and respiratory systems, and damages lung tissues. Step by step demolition, covering the site while demolition action, using kind of sprinkling and other dust reduction technologies are required to contain this menace.

Baijal also stressed on water sprinkling on the collected dust during mechanical sweeping.

All road-maintaining agencies have been asked to put up uniform sign boards displaying the details of agency concerned and the officials responsible for maintenance of the particular road stretches. This exercise has to be completed by mid-October.

The L-G also directed that an intensive anti-firecrackers campaign should be conducted targeting schoolchildren. Baijal also asked all agencies that the NGT order on ban on storage, sale and use of plastic carry bags should be enforced.

The transport department was instructed to intensify inspections of the PUC centres. Operation of Badarpur thermal power plant will be closed from midOctober.
