A proposal for a 100% hike in the honorariums paid to anganwadi workers and helpers has been approved by the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi.

Arvind Kejriwal, the chief minister of Delhi, had announced on July 22 that they were hiking the ‘honorariums’ for anganwadi workers and helpers. This had happened amidst protests by many anganwadi workers and helpers, demanding that their wages be raised to the minimum wage levels.

According to the decision taken by the Delhi cabinet, the workers would now get paid Rs 9,678 per month as opposed to Rs 5,000 earlier, and helpers would be paid Rs 4,839 which is almost twice the Rs 2,500 they were paid earlier.

In addition to this, workers and helpers would be given a mobile/internet allowance of Rs 500 and Rs 250 respectively.

This hike has now been approved by the L-G’s office, according to a statement released by the government, and it states that the Delhi government would bear the expenses of the hike.

“The Central government’s share will remain the same at 1,800 rupees per month. The government of NCT Delhi’s part in the honorarium will increase from 3,200 rupees per month to 7,878 rupees per month,” reads the statement.

Manish Sisodia, the education minister of Delhi, took to Twitter to announce the news and bashed the delay in the process

“The decision by the Delhi government to double the pay of anganwadi personnel gets L-G’s nod. However, it took 26 days,” said the minister on the microblogging site.
