The campaigning for the Bawana assembly byelection ended on Monday with the three major parties in the fray putting their best foot forward seeking votes for their candidates. The voting will be held on August 23.

While top Aam Aadmi Party leaders held a roadshow in the constituency, Delhi BJP chief Manoj Tiwari made a bid to reach out to the poorer sections by having food at a rickshawpuller’s house in Shahbad Dairy jhuggi cluster.

“The family complained of inhuman sewerage condition, poorly maintained toilet blocks and lack of bathing space for women. As he went to the jhuggi cluster’s A-block, local women and residents complained of lack of drinking water,” a BJP spokesperson said.

Earlier in the day, roadshows in Bawana and Shahbad Dairy were led by Aam Aadmi Party’s Delhi convener Gopal Rai and senior leaders Sanjay Singh, Ashutosh and Dilip Pandey.

The Congress, meanwhile, held a series of corner meetings and padyatras in different parts of the poll-bound area.

“People from all strata of society were extending support to the Congress candidate as Surender Kumar has achieved a formidable reputation for carrying out development works during his 15 years as the area MLA,” said Delhi Congress chief Ajay Maken. The Election Commission officials said during the course of the campaign, the district authorities have registered four cases for violation of model code of conduct (MCC).

“Altogether, 314 rallies and public meetings were allowed during the campaign. At least in four cases of MCC violations, FIRs have been registered by the district authorities,” a statement from the CEO office said.

The officials have also seized 25,811 litres of liquor during the course of campaign besides registering 31 FIRs in connection to the seizure besides arresting 26 persons.

“82 licensed arms have been deposited and five unlicensed arms have been seized. Two FIRs have been registered under the Arms Act and four persons arrested,” an official said.
