CM SAYS NDMC ENDS CONTRACT EMPLOYMENT, COUNCIL DIFFERS
Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal said on Monday the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) had decided to end contractual system for works, a claim negated by other members of the council.
The CM took to Twitter and congratulated labourers.
However, other council members, who attended the meeting on Monday, said no such decision was taken as no such proposal was part of the agenda.
“I had said on August 15 that thekedari (contractual hiring) be stopped. The NDMC council today decided that practice will be stopped. Congratulations to poor workers,” Kejriwal tweeted.
“There was no such item was not on agenda and thereby no resolution was passed. There was just verbal discussion on outsourcing of work,” Council member BS Bhati said.
NDMC officials, too, said no such item was part of the meeting agenda.
Earlier, as part of his 14-minute Independence Day address, Kejriwal had described the system of contractual employment as “exploitative” said that he would strive to abolish it in regular employment.
“There are two kinds of contractual labour. One who are engaged for few days in sectors such as construction. And the second lot, who are hired in regular jobs and employed for 365 days. We will strive to do away with the contractual system in regular employment,” Kejriwal had said while delivering his Independence Day speech at Chhatrasal Stadium.
Regularisation of contractual employees has been one of the major pre-poll electoral promises of the Aam Aadmi Party government.
