Assembly bypoll in Bawana today, result to be out on August 28
three lakh voters in Bawana assembly constituency are expected to exercise their franchise on Wednesday to choose their representative in Delhi assembly.
The Aam Aadmi Party, the BJP and the Congress are locked in a three-corner fight in the assembly seat, the outcome of which could determine more than just who represents the Bawana constituency.
Bawana is one of the 12 reserved constituencies for scheduled castes in the 70-member Delhi assembly.
Bypoll in this North Delhi constituency is being held as Aam Aadmi Party legislator Ved Parkash had quit the assembly to join the Bharatiya Janata Party ahead of the municipal elections in April.
Parkash is in the fray on BJP ticket this time round while the AAP has fielded Ram Chandar, who had contested 2008 assembly elections on a BSP ticket but lost. The Congress has fielded party’s old horse Surender Kumar, who won the assembly seat thrice---in 1998, 2003 and 2008.
The three parties had announced their candidates about two months back and have been running an intense campaign, an unusual development for a bypoll.
While the AAP’s campaign focused on development works done by the government, and the possible projects that would come Bawana’s way, the Congress is seeking votes on the performance of its candidate during his tenure as legislator from the area for 15 years.
The BJP on the other hand is banking on the Modi wave which brought dividends for the party in the civic body elections and Rajouri Garden assembly bypoll
Beginning at 8 am, polling will continue till 5 pm.
Counting of votes will be done on August 28.
