Governor Anil Baijal has asked the Public Works Department (PWD) to prepare an action plan to improve greenery on the roads to make them as good as the approach road to Delhi airport.

“L-G had said that PWD roads are the face of Delhi and greening of PWD roads should be at par with the green area maintained by Delhi airport operator at the airport road. Action plan is being prepared to meet the expectations of L-G,” said a PWD official.

About 1,250 km of the city roads are managed by PWD and the department is preparing separate plans for roads.

“We may engage a private agency to maintain greenery at the major roads. On internal roads, horticulture department of PWD may be asked to do it,” the official said.

The officials have been asked to identify space on the road dividers and near footpaths where trees and grass can be planted.

“The option of greenery was always there but department never took it seriously. We hope, after L-G’s direction things will improve. This time we have asked the official to give details of soil and type of plants that will survive on it. Accordingly, greenery will be developed,” the official further said.

PWD officials said they have decided to tie-up with sewage treatment plant to get recycled water for plants.

“We will also identify spaces below flyovers for plantation. This is the best time to start a green drive,” the official said.
