Cop kills self in police station, says couldn’t keep wife, children happy

A 46-year-old head constable allegedly committed suicide by firing at his head with his service revolver in a police station in southwest Delhi on Sunday night, police said.

Pramod Kumar was rushed to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries on Monday evening.

The incident took place around 10.30 pm on Sunday in Delhi Cant Police Station. The resultant noise alerted the staff present at the police station. Police officials rushed towards the source of the noise and found Kumar lying on the ground in a pool of blood.

Police have recovered a onepage suicide note from his possession. A senior police official said that Kumar has written that he was unable to keep his wife and children happy. The note, written in hindi, goes on to mention that no one is to be blamed for his suicide.

Kumar lives with his wife and two children at Gopal Nagar in Najafgarh. He has a three-yearold daughter and a 10-month-old son. The family hails from Madhya Pradesh. He got posted as constable in the Delhi Police department in 1995.

Kumar’s wife is also a head constable. She is posted at Moti Nagar police station, police said.

Police said that the service revolver used by Kumar to commit the crime has been taken into possession.

According to Kumar’s colleagues, he was a humble man. He was handling 17 crime cases.

Police are questionin­g Kumar’s family to ascertain what prompted him to kill himself.
