NSUI may move court to seek recount
The National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) supporters, along with their Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) joint secretary candidate continued their protest outside the Delhi University’s grievance cell for the second day, accusing the administration of not responding to their request for a recount of votes.
DU went to polls to elect their next batch of students’ representatives on Tuesday, and the votes were counted on Wednesday. Avinash Yadav, the NSUI’s joint secretary candidate for the DUSU had lost the seat to ABVP’s Uma Shankar by a margin of 342 votes.
However, Congress’ student wing, NSUI, had cried foul and asked for a recount of the votes but the election committee declined their request. They then approached the grievance cell on Wednesday, and submitted a written application asking for the recount.
“We have given our complaint to the grievance cell. They had told us they would respond by 4pm on Thursday, but we have not heard anything yet (by 7pm on Thursday). Now it looks like they will only respond on Friday,” said Neeraj Mishra, the national media incharge of NSUI.
The NSUI plans to move court, if the grievance cell does not give a favourable decision. “We can only approach court after the grievance cell gives it decision, so we have to wait,” said Ruchi Gupta, the national incharge of NSUI.
The chief election officer, SB Babbar said that the grievance cell had requested for their comments, and are expected to meet on Friday to deliberate before possibly reaching a decision.
The NSUI had bagged the president and vice-president posts of the DUSU this year, claiming the topmost post after five years.
The last time an NSUI candidate had won the post was in 2012. ABVP in turn claimed the secretary and joint secretary posts, creating a fractured mandate for the first time in recent DU history.
