Jaitley launches sewage treatment plant at Lodhi Garden, L-G flags off sanitation drive
Union finance minister Arun Jaitley on Friday inaugurated a 500-KLD sewerage treatment plant at Lodhi Garden.
“Use of such simple technologies and cost-effective methods will not only preserve the environment but also enrich it,” Jaitley said during the inauguration ceremony.
NDMC chairman Naresh Kumar the STP was based on a green technology — Soil BioTechnology (SBT) — which is one-of-its-kind and has many benefits such as “no noise pollution, no air pollution, no odour nuisance, no volatile organic compounds (VOC) emission”.
“The NDMC had earlier set up another unique STP in New Delhi, which is based on the MBR (membrane bio-reactor) technology at Shanti Path, Moti Bagh. Eight more decentralised STPs will be completed within a month while total 10 STPs on the public private partnership model will be completed within the calendar year,” he said.

Speaking on the sidelines of the event, Baijal said vacuum cleaning and mechanical sweeping equipment are being introduced in all municipal corporations of Delhi in order to make the roads of the Capital neat and clean.
“Necessary instructions for dispending the dhalaos (garbage stations) and enhancing the numbers of compactors have been given to all concerned local bodies,” L-G Baijal said.
“Celebrations of weeks and fortnight of sanitation does not serve the purpose till it becomes a regular exercise for each and every citizen in their daily life. The children shall play a vital role towards that direction,” the L-G said.
“The campaign has been organised by the NDMC and students of schools and colleges, besides New Delhi Traders Association (NDTA) members, officers of the department of personnel and training, hawkers of the New Delhi area, hotels and restaurants and owners and operators and officials of the council in response to the Prime Minister’s call to take up the sanitation initiative,” a council official said.
