MHRD backs IIT-D
Ministry of Human Resource Development has backed the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi’s claims that institutions formed under Central or State Act, requiring to have their accounts compulsorily audited by the CAG, did not need an FCRA licence to receive foreign funds. It corroborated IITDelhi’s stand that the institution had in fact been filing returns despite the exemption.
The Centre had barred 18,871 educational institutions, including Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi University, IIT-Delhi, from receiving foreign funds after they reportedly failed to file their annual returns for five consecutive years. The registration of these institutes under the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act, 2010 (FCRA) had been cancelled by the home ministry.
IIT-Delhi claimed they had been filing their returns in time. “We have been filing our returns as per deadlines. There are certain procedural lapses in cancellation of the license and we will take up the issue with the ministry,” IIT-Delhi Director V Ramgopal Rao had told PTI. HTC/PTI
