DELHI RAINS Friday, the wettest September day since 2009, helps Capital cut rain loss

NEW DELHI: Just one day of heavy rain was enough to bring down Delhi’s rain deficiency from around 38% to 29%.

Even though the south west monsoon is yet to start its return journey, Met officials claimed that there are little chances of rain in the next one week. This means Delhiites can enjoy a clear and sunny weather during the festive season.

With just around 5% shortfall, monsoon has been normal across India this time. Delhi is among the few states that has received deficient rain. “But just one day of heavy rain on Friday was enough to bring down the deficiency from around 38% on Thursday to 29% onsunday.themaximumrain— 77.8 mm — was recorded on Friday,” said a regional weather forecasting centre official.

It was the wettest September day in Delhi since 2009. The last time Delhi received such heavy rain, around 93.8mm, was on September 10, 2009.

At present only five states, including Delhi-ncr, are reeling under deficient rain. While Uttar Pradesh is reeling under 27% rain deficiency, Haryana’s rain deficiency is around 24%. Nagaland and Manipur in Northeast have also registered rain deficiency.

“Normally Delhi receives an average of 625 mm of rain between June 1 and September 24. But this year, it has received around 442.8 mm till Saturday,” he added.

A few other states, including Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and Chandigarh, have also received less than normal rain. But according to meteorological parlance a state is considered to be rain deficient only if the shortfall is more than 19%.

Met officials have predicted that the weather would remain sunny over the next seven days at least. The day temperature, which had dropped to around 27.5°C on Friday, is expected to rise to around 35°C.

“Even though the official date for monsoon to bid farewell to Delhi is September 21, it may start its return journey this week,” said a senior official.
