NEW DELHI : A CISF officer had to fire in the air at Azadpur Metro station late Monday evening when a group of people allegedly barged into the station premises, senior officials said.

About 20 people reached the station following a quarrel between two passengers, both of them allegedly drunk. One of them, a 17-year-old, had called up his friends and family after the scuffle, the CISF officer said.

The i ncident took place around 7.30 pm. “Two passengers begin fighting at the Metro station. The CISF personnel deployed there brought them to the unpaid area of the station. However, one of the passengers, a minor boy, made a call to his friends and family,” said the officer.

Soon, a group of people allegedly barged into the Metro station premises and began creating “nuisance”.

“They beat up the rival passenger and a CISF constable. When the CISF personnel tried to control them, they manhandled them and threatened to harm them,” said the officer.

An assistant sub-inspector (ASI) had to pull out his service pistol and fire in the air to scare the miscreants, said CISF. No one was hurt in the firing. The Metro police were soon informed about the situation and a team reached the station.

“The firing was done to save the life of the CISF constable being attacked by the mob. His life was under threat,” said the officer, justifying the firing.

The police, meanwhile, have detained the two passengers as well as some persons and they were being questioned.

The reason behind the quarrel was also being ascertained, a police officer said.
