NEWDELHI: Unidentified motorcycle-borne men robbed a garments trader of ₹17.20 lakh cash after intercepting his cab on the Wazirabad flyover in north Delhi on Sunday evening.

The trader, Vijay Mehra, 45, is a resident of Paschim Vihar and runs a garments shop in Gandhi Nagar. He usually travels to and from work by cab. On Sunday, he had received a payment and was carrying home ₹17.20 lakh in cash.

“Mehra and his nephew hailed an Uber cab and were returning home when their vehicle was intercepted by three youths riding a black motorcycle,” said the officer.

“Two of the robbers got off the bike and tricked the cab driver into opening the window by picking up a fight with him. The moment the driver opened the window, one of the robbers pulled out the car keys,” the officer added.

After that, it did not take much effort to open the rear door and reach out for the bag containing the cash.

“The robbers kept abusing me as they pointed a knife and a pistol-like object at me before snatching my bag,” alleged Mehra.

He added that the robbers allegedly took away the cab keys, so that they could not be followed, and raced away towards Burari.

The victims called the police after which a case of robbery was registered. “A police team formed to crack the case has gathered some vital clues. We are likely to arrest the robbers soon,” said a police officer.
