DEADLY The SUV in which the Galgotias University students were travelling lost control after a tyre burst while trying to overtake a truck; injured admitted to ICU, two of them are critical

NOIDA: Four students of Galgotias University were killed and six others — including four women — were injured on Sunday after the SUV they were travelling in toppled on Yamuna Expressway after suffering a tyre burst.

Police said that the incident took place on Sunday when the ten students were on their way to Pari Chowk from Galgotias University around 2pm. The deceased were identified as Salman, 22, Tushar, 22, Ayush 19 and Bal Ram, 20, residents of Bihar, Greater Noida and New Delhi.

The injured were identified as Vaishali, Saumya, Simran, Prerna, Sharif and Jayesh. Vaishali and Saumya, police said, suffered severe head injuries and were admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Kailash Hospital in Greater Noida because of serious head injuries. The others were discharged after first aid.

Police said the students started in a car from the university’s gate number one with Tushar at the wheels. When the car reached Noida International University (NIU), Tushar allegedly tried to overtake a truck. While Tushar was overtaking the truck, a tyre on the front side of the SUV aapparently burst, causing it to lose control and collide with a divider.

After colliding with the divider, the car flipped thrice before coming to a halt.

The incident was reported to the police when a second driver, Ankit Aggarwal who was driving behind the SUV in his Honda Civic car saw all the passengers bleeding and lying unconscious on the road. Aggarwal immediately made a call to the police control room and shifted some of the injured to Kailash Hospital.

“The car flipped in front of me.

WHAT HAPPENED

I immediately rushed to the aid of the passengers, some of who were lying on the road. I also informed the police and started shifting some of the injured to a hospital,” said Aggarwal.

He managed to shift four people, while the remaining victims were shifted to the hospital in a PCR van. Four men were declared brought dead.

Station house officer, Dankaur police station, Farmood Ali Pundir, said, “Jayesh and Ayush were students of B.tech first

year. The other eight students were in first year of Psychology (Honours) at the Galgotias University.”

It took police officials and doctors an hour to establish the identities of all the victims and inform their family members.

SRA Rizwi, casualty medical officer of Kailash Hospital said, “The condition of two women is critical and a team of doctors is attending to them. The four who were brought dead had sustained severe injuries on their heads.”

All of them leave for Pari Chowk in an SUV driven by Tushar. 300 metres from the university, a front tyre of the car bursts while Tushar is trying to overtake a truck. The car hits a divider and flips multiple times before coming to a stop

AK Jain, the dean of students welfare at Galgotias University, said, “The students had left in a group after attending their classes. We were informed about the incident by the police. We helped the policemen to get in touch with the families of all the victims.”

Police said that the car was damaged badly with all its windows smashed in.

Eyewitnesses also said there were blood spots spread near 50 meters at the spot.
