NEW DELHI: Former assistant secretary of state Nisha Desai Biswal was on Tuesday named the new president of the Us-india Business Council (USIBC).

Biswal previously served as the assistant secretary for South and Central Asian affairs during 2013-2017. Her tenure saw a marked increase in ties between New Delhi and Washington, and the launch of the Us-india Strategic and Commercial Dialogue.

“As one of the most significant and fastest growing markets, India is an important economic partner for the United States," Biswal said in a statement after her appointment by the US Chamber of Commerce.

“Likewise, Indian companies are investing in ever greater numbers here in the US. I am proud to be part of an organisation which will play such a critical role shaping Us-india relations, and I am thrilled at the chance to help our companies deliver a brighter, more prosperous future for the citizens of the US and India,” she said.

She will join the USIBC on October 23. “We are thrilled to welcome Biswal to the Us-india Business Council and to the US Chamber team,” US Chamber executive vice-president Myron Brilliant was quoted by a release as saying.
