DELHI COPS SAY CAR MAY HAVE BEEN STOLEN FOR A JOYRIDE

NEWDELHI: Police on said that Arvind Kejriwal’s blue Wagonr would not have been stolen if it was parked in an authorized lot and been equipped with safety devices.

Madhur Verma, Delhi Police spokesperson, said that the car was stolen from a roadside outside the secretariat gate, almost

100 metres from the authorised parking lot.

“An authorised parking space has security arrangements in place and that deters thieves,” he said.

He also said that since the blue Wagonr was old, it lacked strong security features. “Features such as gear lock, steering wheel lock and GPS system dis- courage thieves from stealing vehicles,” he said while appealing to car owners to get their cars protected.

The officer, however, said that prima facie it appeared to be the work of an individual seeking a “joyride.

“We have come across many thieves who steal cars or bikes, go on a joyride, park the vehicle at a public parking place and then steal another vehicle from there. It is possible that the thief was one such individual looking for a joyride,” said Verma.

“It is possible that the car thief used a master key or any old car key to open the door. The car’s window was not broken and some of these old cars can be opened using other keys,” spokesperson Verma added.
