NEWDELHI: The body of an unidentified man with his face apparently disfigured with a stone was recovered from an isolated spot near Yamuna Khadar, Mayur Vihar, in east Delhi on Saturday afternoon.

Police said it appeared that the man’s face was crushed with the stone to hide his identity and mislead them in their investigation.

The identity of the deceased could not be established till Sunday evening.

A case of murder was registered at the Mayur Vihar police station against unknown persons. Police suspect that the man was murdered by somebody known to him.

An empty liquor bottle, two plastic glasses, one matchbox, and an empty bottle of water were found near the crime scene. Though personal enmity appears to the prime motive behind the murder, police have not ruled out robbery angle in the case.

A police officer said that the crime came to their notice around 2.30pm when a farmer who lives in the slums at Yamuna Khadar area spotted the body and called the police control room. A police team reached the crime scene and cordoned off the area. The body was hidden and the area around it was soaked in blood.

“We did not find any documents from the victim’s body or from the crime scene that could help us establish his identity,” said the officer.

After inspection the crime scene, the officer said, it appeared that the victim had consumed liquor with someone who later murdered him.

Police are analysing the list of men who went missing in Delhi and adjoining states in the last one week for clues about the victim.
