NEW DELHI: A couple’s bid to escape being run over by an approaching train by jumping away proved f utile when another train crushed them on the parallel track in west Delhi’s Mundka two days ago.

The mishap was reported around 2.30pm on Friday when the two 20-year-olds — identified as Aman and Alisha — were walking on a track.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (railways) Parvez Ahmed told Hindustan Times that as the two were busy talking to each other, they heard the sound of an approaching train and as they turned back to check, they saw a goods train coming towards them.

Eyewitnesses told police that with little time in hand, the only way the couple thought to save themselves was jumping on to an adjacent track.

However, as they jumped on the next track, the Janata Express moving towards Nangloi was passing by at that moment and the two were run over.

Police said it appeared to be a case of an accident and prima facie ruled out foul play.

When asked if the two victims had headphones on at the time of the incident which is why they failed to hear the approaching trains, police said neither of them had earphones on at the time of the accident.

They were both rushed to the hospital where doctors declared them brought dead.

The Sarai Rohila Railway police station is probing the matter.

The postmortem was conducted on Saturday and the bodies were handed over to the families.

The man, Aman, lived in Karala while Alisha was a resident of Trinagar.
