NEW DELHI: A 28-year-old woman from Manipur was allegedly punched and hit with a brick by an auto-rickshaw driver following an argument over fares in southeast Delhi’s Sunlight Colony on Wednesday. The woman also alleged that the auto driver threatened to kill her.

Police said a case of causing hurt and criminal intimidation was registered against the auto driver on the complaint of the woman, a housewife. Police said the woman has allegedly identified the auto driver as Joy, a resident of Sunlight Colony area in south Delhi. He had not been arrested till Saturday.

A police officer said that the alleged incident took place when the woman and her brother approached the auto driver to go to South Extension. In her complaint, the woman said that the auto driver demanded ₹150, but she refused saying the usual fare is not more than ₹60. “He said he will not accept anything less than ₹100. In the meantime, another auto came and its driver agreed to take us for ₹60. At this, the first driver threatened to beat up the new driver if he accepted the ride,” the woman claimed.

When the woman told the auto driver to not intimidate the other driver, he allegedly punched her and abusing her. When she protested, he threw a piece of brick at her which hit her chest, she added. The complaint added that the auto drivers then left the spot.
