Man attacked on Diwali dies at AIIMS

NEW DELHI : A 26-year-old man, who was allegedly attacked with sticks and bricks by four men over a gambling dispute on Diwali night in south Delhi’s Tigri, died at AIIMS Trauma Centre on Monday.

He had been admitted to the hospital for the last 11 days, police said. Vicky had suffered serious head injuries and slipped into a coma soon after he was admitted to the hospital on the night of October 19.

Police said doctors told them that Vicky had suffered a brain haemorrhag­e in the attack and had internal bleeding.

One of the attackers Vishal Kumar was arrested a day after the attack. The other three are still absconding. Police said the attack was a fallout between two rival groups involved in gambling.

The two gangs were reportedly fighting over supremacy to run gambling dens in the area. Vicky was reportedly attacked following a dispute while consuming alcohol and playing cards with the four men. Additional deputy commission­er of police south Chinmoy Biswal told HT police had earlier registered a case of attempt to murder, which they have now converted it to murder. “We have already arrested one of the accused men. Our teams are working to trace the others.”

Vicky lived with his family in JJ Colony in Tigri . He was involved in two cases, including an attempt to murder case at the local police station.
