NEWDELHI: The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) has served a notice to Tihar jail administration and Delhi Police asking them to explain why they hadn’t carried out the death sentences ordered by t he Supreme Court in December 16 gang-rape case.

The women’s panel said they had received a complaint from the mother of the victim.

The victim’s mother alleged that even after five months of the SC verdict, t he convicts had not been hanged.

“The SC upheld death sentence for the four convicts. Even after five months of SC’S verdict, the death sentence has not been carried out. Nirbhaya’s mother complained to the Delhi Commission for Women that her daughter’s murderers were still not hanged,” a statement from the women’s panel said.

Tihar jail officials said death row convicts are hanged only after the Supreme Court rejects their review petition and the President also refuses pardon.

DCW’S chairperson Swati JaiHind sent a notice to Tihar Jail administration and DCP South District.

“In the notice, she has inquired as to why, even after five months of Supreme Court’s verdict, the accused had not been hanged,” a DCW official said.

The notice also asked if the Tihar Jail officials had issued order of death sentence to the four accused.

“Whether an order authorizing the execution of the sentences of the death has been issued,” the notice asked.

The commission has asked the officials and DCP to respond to the inquiries by November 6.

Jai Hind said that it is a shame that the December 16 victim is yet to receive justice. “Her mother and the entire nation are pleading for the justice. The convicts must be hanged at the earliest,” she said.
