Woman reports rape after 17 years

NEWDELHI: Seventeen years after she was raped, a woman approached the police on Sunday alleging she was sexually assaulted by a self-styled godman. The 28-year-old woman told the police that she was raped by when she was 11. The incident was reported from a spiritual and meditation centre in outer Delhi.

The woman reportedly told the police that 17 years ago, she used to accompany her father to the centre in Rohini for meditation. Police said the alleged accused allegedly took her inside a room at the centre and raped her. She also alleged that the godman had threatened her not to talk to anyone about it.

Deputy Commission­er of Police (Rohini) Rishi Pal said that a case has been registered and investigat­ion handed to the District I nvestigati­on Unit (DIU).

“A complaint was received from the woman who alleged that she was raped by a head of the centre. She alleged that she was raped when she went to the institutio­n in the summer of 2000,” said Pal.

DCP Pal said that during investigat­ion, police found the alleged accused has not visited the centre in last seven years.

“Initial investigat­ion shows that the accused has settled in some other country. We are probing whatever leads we have as of now to trace the accused and establish t he correct sequence of events,” said Pal.
