NEWDELHI: Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal on Thursday directed authorities to put in place a system to check use of illegal fuels by industrial units near Anand Vihar.

The transport hub of Anand Vihar is one of the most polluted areas in Delhi, and is surrounded by industrial areas in Sahibabad, UP and Patparganj, east Delhi.

The L-G was chairing a meeting convened by the Supreme Court-appointed Environment Pollution (Prevention and Control) Authority (EPCA) to discuss and review traffic management and environment pollution i n Anand Vihar and adjoining Kaushambi in Uttar Pradesh. “The L-G advised the environment department, DPCC and other agencies to go door-todoor and check use of non-permitted fuels,” a statement from L-G office read.

The L-G also directed the East Delhi Municipal Corporation commissioner and the Public Works Department (PWD) to finish paving work in the bus terminal to minimize dust pollution. For better traffic management, the L-G asked officials to explore the possibility of a multi-modal integration system to be run by one agency.

Delhi Traffic Police said that it has improved the traffic flow at exit and entry gate of Anand Vihar ISBT by forcing the buses to remain in a row. “We have also fixed height barriers on the road leading to Dabur T –point to prevent entry of heavy vehicles. Encroachments have been removed around the foot overbridge,” traffic police said.

The meeting was attended by Delhi transport Minister Kailash Gahlot, EPCA chairman Bhure Lal, PWD principal secretary, transport commissioner and other senior officials, including those of Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation.

MECHANISED CLEANING

To contain dust pollution in the area, the Delhi government said on Thursday that it will start vacuum cleaning the Anand Vihar inter-state bus terminal (ISBT) premises next month onwards. “Tenders are being prepared to procure at least four vacuum cleaners for Anand Vihar ISBT. Besides, directions are being issued to sprinkle water frequently,” said an official of Delhi Transport Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (DTIDC), the government-run company which is responsible for the project.
