DRAFT South body finalises blueprint for the the roll out of new parking policy in the Capital

NEW DELHI: Delhi’s first ‘Area Parking Plan’ has been drafted by the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) under the upcoming ‘Delhi Maintenance and Management of Parking Rules, 2017’.

The plan has identified six areas as a case study for implementing the new rules. The areas include Kailash Colony, Bhikaji Cama Place, Lajpat Nagar, GK-I (M&N) block, Nehru Place and GK-II (M Block).

Sources said the parking rules file after being vetted by the law department has now been sent to the Lieutenant Governor.

Transport commissioner Vasha Joshi said that the SDMC is going to submit the Area Parking Plan to the special committee, which is reviewing the parking policy, in 12 days time.

Following this, other civic agencies are likely to follow their zonal parking plans. Here are a few key features.

PAPERLESS PARKING

To end illegal parking in neighbourhoods, the civic agency will digitise the system. All information related to the number of carparking lots, available space, timing and fees will be made online. The information will be accessible through a mobile application.

“A person who is residing in Greater Kailash will be able to check the availability of parking space at Lajpat Nagar and book the parking slot in advance,” said a senior official of SDMC.

The parking attendants would be issued e-machines for collecting payments through smart cards (similar to DMRC smart cards) only.

FEASIBILITY OF EXISTING PARKING LOTS

A joint team including officials from DDA, Traffic Police, independent architects and SDMC are revisiting the earmarked parking spaces to find out their viability. Based of the feedback of residents and shopkeepers, civic agency will shift the parking lots, if needed.

TRANSIT PARKING AREA

SDMC has decided top earmark ‘transit parking areas’ in each locality.

These would be the area where cabs and commercial vehicles will be allowed go take stoppage for maximum 15 minutes (pick and drop services) time.

In each locality, at least 4-5 lanes will be identified as ‘no parking’ areas.

These would help in free movement of ambulances and other vehicles in case of emergency, barriers free.
