Old Delhi set to get 5 stack parking lots
NEW DELHI: To decongest the Walled City, North Delhi Municipal Corporation has planned to develop stack car parking lots at five key locations in the next eight months.
The project has been taken up on the direction of lieutenant governor to unclog Sadar Paharganj and City zones.
The sites selected for the construction of stack car parking lots include the old zonal office complex at Idgah Road, Jaat Dharamshala along the Hanuman Setu, Salim Garh Fort, Pratap Nagar Metro Station and Jama Masjid Metro Station. The project is expected to cost the civic body around ₹20 crore.
“Areas under City and Sadar Paharganj zones are highly commercialised, thus finding a space for parking cars is always a herculean task here. People leave their vehicles on roadsides, leading to chaos in the markets,” said senior official from the North Corporation.
Despite the provision for four multi-level car parking lots close to the busy market areas such as Parade Ground, Gandhi Maidan, Asaf Ali Road and Church Mission Road, visitors and shopkeepers are generally reluctant to take the vehicles here and walk till their destinations.
“But these stack car parking lots will be located in the middle of markets, religious places, monuments, and will also be eas- ily accessible. For example, one of the parking lots will be constructed few metres from Hanuman Mandir at Yamuna Bazaar. We are assuming that more people will use it on daily basis,” the official added.
The civic agency has already invited tenders for developing the sites in six months time from the date of issuing tenders. The sites will be run by the concessionaire. The completion of project will create space for parking of at least 500 cars.
