The family was against the girl’s love affair with one of her classmates, police said. The father of the 17-year-old girl shot her with a country made 315 bore rifle and then dragged her to a nearby crematorium, where she was set ablaze. It is unclear if she had died before being set on fire.

Four other members of the family are also suspected to be involved in the killing. The victim’s mother was out in the field when the incident took place.

The father and the uncle were sent to police remand till December 18, while the aunt was sent to judicial custody.

Station House officer of Sar Mathura police Puran Mal Yadav said the girl had eloped with her boyfriend, who is also from the same caste as that of the victim. But her father, who disapproved of the relationship, had traced her and brought her back to the village.

The accused Banay Singh and his father Basanta have criminal records, police sources said.
