NEWDELHI: A 20-year-old man was battered to death at a public park in east Delhi’s Kalyanpuri on Monday night.

Police said the man’s face was crushed and disfigured by stones. The murder was reported on Tuesday morning when a local resident spotted the body and called the police.

Ombir Singh, deputy commissioner of police (east), said a case of murder has been registered at the Kalyanpuri police station. Singh ruled out robbery as the man’s mobile phone and other belongings were found intact.

The deceased, identified as Ranjit Kumar, lived with his parents in Block-2, Kalyanpuri. He was a helper at a local shop and was allegedly addicted to drugs, said police.

On Monday evening, a police officer said, Kumar’s parents reprimanded him for his bad habits after which he left home. His family members called him and asked him to come back when he did not return home till late in the night.

Kumar told his parents that he was on his way back home. But when he did not return till midnight, his family started searching for him in the locality.

“The family and friends dialled his mobile phone multiple times but their calls went unanswered,” said Singh. The body was discovered in the morning by some locals who informed the police.

The victim was identified with the help of his mobile phone. Kumar’s body has been sent for post mortem, said police.
