POLICE SAID THE WOMAN, A STATELEVEL SHOOTER, HAD BEEN DEPRESSED FOR THE PAST ONE YEAR

NEW DELHI: A 47-year-old woman shot and wounded her mother and brother at their residence in south Delhi’s Defence Colony, shortly after midnight on Friday.

The woman, a state-level shooter, tried to shoot her father who overpowered her.

Though the reason for her action remains unclear, police said the woman, Sangeeta Singh, had reportedly been depressed for the past one year and was undergoing treatment.

Around 12.30am on Friday, Sangeeta, who was allegedly drunk, used her licensed pistol to shoot at her 75-year-old mother Geeta and her elder brother Harsaran, 48, police said. The two were rushed to a nearby hospital where their condition is stable.

Police said Sangeeta, who had reportedly consumed sleeping pills and alcohol before the incident, had to hospitalised because of the impact the cocktail had on her body. “We are yet to find the motive. The victims’ statements will be recorded once we get permission from doctors,” said a police officer.

Singh’s parents and their children, both unmarried, live on the second floor of a two-storey building in Defence Colony’s C Block.

“Sangeeta’s father Sharan Singh told us that she was in her room when her brother Harsaran asked her to join them for dinner. After a few minutes, she came out to the drawing room where Sharan was sitting with his wife and son. He told us that his daughter appeared ‘unsteady’ and had a pistol in her hand,” said deputy commissioner of police (south) Romil Baaniya.

The woman first shot at her brother and bullet hit Harsaran’s right thigh. She then fired two rounds at her mother. The first bullet caught Geeta on her abdomen and the other hit her chest and she collapsed. After that, Sangeeta tried shoot her father. “Sharan held her hand and stopped her,” said Baaniya.

“The injured were taken to AIIMS Trauma Centre and a semi-conscious Sangeeta was sent to AIIMS for treatment,” Baaniya said on Friday evening.

“Sangeeta is a competitive shooter and participated in state events. She used to run an organisation in Gurgaon dealing in adventure tourism. But over the past year, she had stopped socialising,” he added.

Sangeeta’s father said he could not think of an immediate trigger. Police said she had lately become a recluse.

Police registered a case under section 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code and will arrest her after her discharge.

Officials at AIIMS said Sangeeta said is being treated to remove the drugs from her system.
