DUBAI: FIFA president Gianni Infantino has given his whole hearted backing to the controvers­ial video assistant referee technology. The system, criticised by some fans for slowing a game down, can only be used for key incidents in matches.

The technology’s use in Germany’s Bundesliga and Italian Serie A is part of the tests being carried out by the Internatio­nal Football Associatio­n Board (IFAB).“THE results so far have been very encouragin­g, very positive,” Infantino said.

LIVERPOOL LAND VIRGIL VAN DIJK

LONDON: Liverpool signed Southampto­n’s Virgil van Dijk on Wednesday for a reported £75 million in a deal that makes him the world’s most expensive defender. The Dutchman will join the Reds on January 1 having already had his medical and agreed personal terms.

“Delighted and honoured to have agreed to become a Liverpool FC player,” Van Dijk wrote on Twitter
