NEWDELHI: A 20-year-old man, who worked as a delivery boy for a major online retail company, has been arrested by police for being involved in armed robberies and snatching.

Police said the accused, Momin, had got frustrated with the pressure of delivering 80 parcels a day for a major online retail company and turned to crime to make quick money.

The accused stole a twowheeler and snatched a mobile phone with an accomplice. He even procured a country made pistol but soon ran out of luck when he was arrested at a police picket in New Friends Colony on Monday.

“At a police picket in New Friends Colony, Momin was stopped for checking. He could not produce the documents for the two-wheeler he was riding. On being searched, we also found that he was carrying a weapon and a mobile phone. He later admitted that he and his accomplice, Ayaan, had snatched the mobile phone last month and the two-wheeler was also stolen,” said DCP (southeast) Chinmoy Biswal.

During interrogation, Okhla resident Momin told the police that he was not very happy with his job, which required him to meet a target to deliver 80 in a day. In return he would be paid only Rs 15,000 per month for it.

“He told us that he had to leave his home early in the morning and visit the local warehouse of the company in Okhla and a subcentre at Jamia Nagar from where he had to collect the packets and make deliveries. If he did not deliver 80 parcels, it would mean a loss of pay,” said Biswal.

NEW FRIEND MADE HIM A ‘CRIMINAL’

Momin was looking for a new job and in December he met Ayaan at a birthday party and became friends with him police said.

“Ayaan used to clean vehicles in parking lots and told Momin that there were abandoned vehicles at the parking lot could be sold for good money. Momin ganged up with Ayaan and they decided to steal a two wheeler and arrange for a pistol for committing robbery and snatching,” said Biswal.

Ayaan arranged a countrymade pistol and they both stole a two wheeler from Jamia Nagar on which they would carry snatchings or robbings. On December 30, they both robbed a mobile phone from Sarita Vihar area which was later recovered from Momin. Ayaan is currently absconding.
