NEWDELHI: A 28-year-old man with a criminal past was stabbed to death by a group of men in a park in Dwarka late Tuesday afternoon, police said. His 17-year-old friend tried to save him, but was kicked and punched. The two victims raised an alarm and drew a crowd, but the killers fled by then, police said.

Police said that when the Avinash Kumar, was being taken to a hospital by the teenager, Kumar reportedly told his friend to take him to his home. Police said the decision proved fatal as Kumar bled to death before his family took him to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital later.

There were at least four killers, three of who have been identified, said Shibesh Singh, DCP (south-west). The motive behind the murder remained unknown even as investigators said they were probing the possibility of a financial dispute or a turf war triggering the killing.

Avinash Kumar was a resident of Sagarpur. “Kumar had been booked for around 13-14 criminal cases, such as robbery and vehicle theft,” said the DCP.

On Tuesday afternoon, Kumar had come to meet the teenager in west Delhi’s Dabri. As they were returning home on a scooter, Kumar received a phone call asking him to reach Dwarka Sector 1, the teenager told police in his statement. “As Kumar and the caller walked into a park near an MTNL office, I parked our scooter in the street nearby. When I walked into the park, I saw fourfive persons stabbing Kumar. One of them was also holding a gun. I tried to intervene, but they kicked and punched me. They fled the spot when I raised an alarm,” the teenager said.

Kumar had received stab wounds on his chest and waist. Police have registered a case of murder at the Dwarka South police station.
