NEW DELHI: A 22-year-old woman was arrested on Wednesday for robbing a man of his mobile phone after threatening to kill him with a surgical blade, police said.the police did not disclose her name.

AK Singla, deputy commissioner of police (northeast), said the woman had been involved in similar crimes but was never arrested because none of her victims ever filed a police complaint. However, on Wednesday, she ran out of her luck soon after she robbed the mobile phone .

Singla said the woman was a dance teacher, who lives with two other women in Karawal Nagar.

The DCP said that around 12.30 pm, the complainant, Manish Pal from east Delhi’s Indrapuri, was returning home along with his friend Manoj Kumar after attending coaching classes in Karawal Nagar. “The two had reached Sri Ram Chowk in Shiv Vihar, near Karawal Nagar, when they were stopped by a woman, who was dressed like a man,” said Singla.

The woman demanded their mobile phones. “The two were confused whether the person who stopped them was a man or a woman. When the two asked her why she wanted their mobiles, the woman took out a surgical blade from her pocket and threatened to kill the two if they resisted,” said a senior police officer. “The two men screamed for help. Suddenly, the woman snatched Pal’s mobile phone and ran away. The two followed her to a house and informed the local residents about the crime,” the officer said.

The local police was informed and the woman was caught. The police team recovered the mobile phone and the surgical blade from her, the officer said. A case of robbery was registered and she was arrested. Singla said the woman told the police that she was a primary school dropout. “Her parents played drums (dhol) and performed at weddings. During her childhood, she learnt dance and later became a dance teacher. However, her dance coaching business did not do well and soon she became unemployed,” said the DCP.

“The woman began extorting money from street vendors . Since the extortion amount was less, nobody ever filed any police complaint,” the officer said.
