DELHI UNIVERSITY HAS ALREADY SENT 157 NAMES TO THE

GOVT IN THE PAST

NEWDELHI: The deadlock over formation of governing bodies (GB) in the government-funded Delhi University colleges may get over by this month-end as the university is likely to soon send an additional list of experts to the government to finalise the members of the GBS.

The university will be sending a panel with around 50 to 100 names by mid-january. The uni- versity has already sent 157 names to the government in the past. “Some names have been finalised while many others are being considered. A final list containing 50 to 100 names of eminent personalities will be sent to the government by January 15. We hope the issue is resolved soon and colleges start getting funds,” said a top DU official.

The government and the university are engaged in a tussle over formation of the GBS in 28 colleges –fully and partially funded by the government. In July, the government said it is withholding funds from these colleges till the GBS are formed. Twelve colleges are fully funded while sixteen colleges are 5% funded by the government.

As a result, colleges are strug- gling to pay salaries to teachers and staff. In October, the government announced they will release the funds for one month.

Some colleges have not been able to pay the salaries for December while some others said they have managed to pay the salaries but won’t be able to do it for January.

“We have not paid salaries to any of our teachers and staff for December and won’t be able to do for January if funds don’t come. There are some funds but they are for students’ welfare and diverting them for salaries won’t be good,” said S K Garg, principal Deen Dayal Upadhyaya college.

Payal Mago, principal of the Shaheed Raj Guru College, said overall functioning of colleges is getting impacted due to lack of funds. “We have somehow managed to pay salaries by using other funds. There are other issues as well because we can’t hire ad-hoc teachers, do basic maintenance and repair of college till we get funds,” she said.
