RESPONSE Force said it retaliated to the inhuman act of a sniper killing a BSF jawan, and destroyed three outposts of Pak Rangers

JAMMU: The Border Security Force (BSF) on Thursday said it has killed an intruder in RS Pura sector of Jammu and destroyed three mortar positions of the Pakistan army, a day after one of its soldiers was killed in a sniper attack from across the border.

BSF Jammu Frontier inspector general Ram Awtar told Hindustan Times, “After we lost head constable RP Hazra in a sniper shot, BSF mounds retaliated to the inhuman act and Pak Rangers also opened heavy fire at us. We gave a solid response and inflicted heavy casualties but I can’t quantify their loss.”

He said the gunfight between BSF and Pak Rangers in Samba sector went all through Wednesday night during which “weapons of all sorts - small arms, automatic and mortars” were used.

“We inflicted heavy damage to their three posts. Their infrastructure, solar panel and weapons were damaged. Their posts suffered a major loss. We also inflicted heavy casualties,” said Ram Awtar.

Head constable RP Hazra was injured on Wednesday, his birth- day, and was rushed to a nearby medical facility, but he succumbed to the injuries.

The killing of the 51-year-old was the first sniper-related incident this year. On December 31, sepoy Jagsir Singh, 32, was killed by a Pakistani sniper in Nowshera sector of Rajouri district.

The officer identified the Pakistani intruder, aged around 30-35, as Md Anwar, son of Fazal Ahmed, a resident of Sahibkala in Sialkot of Pakistan’s Punjab province. The IG added that Anwar, one of the three infiltrators, “seemed to be a terrorists’ guide.” “It was an infiltration bid. He had crossed and entered into Indian territory.”

The officer said that the BSF troopers detected the intruder “despite dense fog” and neutralised him around 7am.

Ram Awtar said the BSF has intimated Pakistan Rangers about the intruder and his death but the latter has not responded so far to claim the body.

The officer added that the BSF has launched “Operation Alert” along the over 200-km-long International Border in Jammu and Kashmir to curb the increasing movement of infiltrating militants from across the border.
