NEW DELHI: A 23-year-old man was killed after his car crashed into a concrete drain wall and went up in flames in outer Delhi’s Narela early Saturday morning.

Police said the driver identified by his first name, Anand, was speeding and lost control over his Hyndai i20 car due to dense morning fog. They said they are waiting for the post mortem report to confirm whether the victim was driving drunk or not.

Rajneesh Gupta, deputy commissioner of police (Rohini dis- trict), said Anand died because of severe head and knee injuries and not because of burns. Gupta said Anand was taken out of the badly damaged car by a truck driver seconds before it caught fire.

Anand ran a medical store in Narela, said police.

Police officers said the accident came to their notice around 1.30 am after a call to the police control room. The caller informed the police that a speeding i-20 car had hit a concrete wall of a drain near gate number 4 of Anaj Mandi in Narela.

An assistant sub-inspector reached the accident spot with his team and found the car

burnt. People present there told the police team that the injured driver has been taken to Satyawati Raja Harish Chandra Hospital.

“When the police reached the hospital, the doctors told them that the driver was brought dead to the hospital,” said a police officer. During enquiry at the accident site, the police personnel were told that the car was moving at a high speed and there was poor visibility in the area because of dense fog.

“The driver lost control and the car rammed the wall. Sparking started in the front portion of the vehicle and a truck driver rescued the injured driver before the vehicle went up in flames,” said the officer.

He also said that the driver’s identity was known after the police ascertained the car’s ownership.

When the car owner was contacted, he told the police that he had recently sold the vehicle to Anand.
