NEW DELHI: Alleged drug dealers who had created special cavities in their car to smuggle drugs into Delhi from Andhra Pradesh and Odisha have been arrested, police said on Monday.

A total of 123 kilos of marijuana, worth ₹50 lakh in the retail market, was recovered, said Chinmoy Biswal, DCP (southeast). The modified Tata Indigo Manza car has been seized, the officer added.

“A special chamber was created in the rear seat of the car to conceal the drugs. It was covered so well that it would arouse no suspicion. The boot of the car too had a secret space,” said the DCP.

He said that the modifications helped the gang transport their consignment across states. The arrests and recoveries began on Thursday when the south Delhi police district’s special staff received a tip-off about two drug suppliers headed towards Madanpur Khadar in a car to deliver a consignment of drugs.

“A picket was set up on the Mathura Road, near Sarita Vihar Metro station, around 9 am. We stopped the car and on checking it found 88 kilos of ganja(marijuana) in the two secret chambers in the car,” the DCP said.

Two men, Jagbandhu Patra and Rajgir Kumar, were arrested. They were each earning around ₹10,000-₹12,000 for smuggling each consignment into Delhi, police said.

Later, Mahinoor and Moorthi Shankar, were nabbed and 35 kilos of ganja was recovered from their possessions.
