PM Modi urges top cops to fight cyber crime on ‘highest priority’
NEW DELHI/GWALIOR: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday highlighted the growing threat of cyber crimes and urged top police officers to work towards curbing them on the ‘highest priority’.
Speaking on the concluding day of the annual conference of DGPS and IGPS at the BSF Academy in Gwalior’s Tekanpur, the PM touched upon the importance of using social media to fight cyber crimes and pushed for local language messaging to deal with the threat to cyber security more effectively, an official release said.
North Block officials told Hindustan Times that during the meeting, National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval made a power point presentation to the PM and a select group of DGPS, highlighting the role police can play in controlling internal strife, which is often aggravated by the powers from across the border.
“With countries like Pakistan still following the Qurban Ali doctrine of exploiting fault lines within the Indian society, there is a need for better police-civil society interaction so that foreign vested interests do not exploit the situation ,” said a senior delegate at Tekanpur.
The PM called for a ‘greater openness’ among Indian states on security issues, stating: “Just as openness is getting increased acceptance worldwide, there is need for greater openness among states (in India) too, on security issues. Security cannot be achieved selectively, or alone. But breaking of silos and infor- mation sharing among states can help make everyone more secure.”
“We are not an assembled entity, but an organic entity,” the release quoted him as saying.
Referring to the radicalisation of youth, Modi urged the top police officers to use technology to pinpoint the problem areas.
According to Modi, India has a key role to play in achieving the ‘global consensus towards greater information sharing on illicit financial dealings’.
The PM also commended the role of the officers who brought about a change in the nature of the conference. “The conference has now become more relevant, in the context of challenges and responsibilities facing the country...” he said.
“As a result of the discussions in the conference over the last few years, now, once an objective is clearly defined for the police force, there is a lot of cohesion in the execution.... The range of topics being discussed has become more broad-based over the last two years...” he said.
PM TO ATTEND WEF
Modi will travel to Switzerland on January 22 on a two-day visit during which he will deliver the keynote address at the plenary session of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos.
“Prime Minister will deliver the keynote speech at the plenary session of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos- Klosters, Switzerland, on January 23, 2018,” the ministry said. This will be the first time in 22 years that an Indian PM will participate.
