NEW DELHI: A 46-year-old female lawyer was allegedly beaten in Rohini Court on Tuesday afternoon. Condemning the incident, the Rohini Court Bar Association has called for a one-day strike on Thursday to highlight the lack of security in the court premises, said advocate Mahavir Sharma, president of the bar association.

Sharma said that the incident took place when two groups of people involved in a case began fighting with each other outside a courtroom.

The female lawyer was representing one of the groups. She came in between the fighting groups to save her client and got beaten instead.

“An FIR has been registered based on the statement of the female lawyer. This incident shows how unsafe advocates are who come to Rohini Court. There is absolutely no security here. To highlight this, we will abstain from working on Thursday by going on strike,” said Sharma.

The female lawyer said that she was representing a man in a case who has custody of his two minor daughters.

There was a scheduled meeting between the minors and their mother in the mediation centre inside the court premises on Tuesday afternoon.

The fight was triggered after the mother allegedly arrived with six other persons who began misbehaving with the lawyer’s client.

“The group was trying to forcefully take the minors with them. When I intervened, they began beating me. I called my junior associate for help. But they assaulted her too by pulling her hair. I ran for help towards a police chowki in the premises. There was no lady constable,” said the lawyer.

She made a call to police. A case of assault and criminal intimidation was registered at Prashant Vihar police station. Deputy commissioner of police (Rohini) Rajneesh Gupta confirmed the incident and said that a person has been arrested in the case. Further investigation is underway.
