Sarita Devi, Sonia cruise into last four of boxing Nationals

ROHTAK: L. Sarita Devi (60kg) and Sonia Lather (57kg) advanced to the semi-finals after winning their respective bouts at the National Women’s Boxing Championsh­ips on Wednesday.

Sarju Bala (48kg) also cruised through to the semis, beating Deepa Kumari 5-0 at the National Boxing Academy in Rajiv Gandhi Stadium here.

Sarita out-punched Arunachal Pradesh’s Aquillia Dupak in the first round itself to make the medal rounds. Sonia, on the other hand, defeated Uttarakhan­d’s Kamla Bisht 5-0. In other encounters, Shashi Chopra also booked her place in the semi-finals defeating Dimple Tanwar 5-0. Nikhat Zareen went one step closer to the gold after defeating Abha 5-0.

MANIPUR TROUNCE GUJARAT 28-1

IMPHAL: Wangamba Kshetrimay­um and Heramani Singh Lisham struck five goals each as Manipur Hockey hammered Hockey Gujarat 28-1 on the fourth day of the Senior Men National Championsh­ip 2018 (B Division). The Manipur players scored eight goals each in the first two quarters and backed them up with six goals each in the last two quarters. Interestin­gly, only three goals out of the 29 goals scored in the match came through a penalty corner. Another high-scoring encounter in Pool A saw Central Secretaria­t defeat Tripura Hockey 12-1.

MALIK FIRES INDIA TO BIG WIN VS SRI LANKA

NEW DELHI: Deepak Malik scored an unbeaten 179 off 103 balls as India beat Sri Lanka by six wickets in their opening match of the ODI Blind Cricket World Cup in the UAE on Wednesday.

India won the toss and elected to field. Sri Lanka scored 357/8 in 40 overs. For Sri Lanka, Suranga Sampath scored 68 runs and K A Silva 64.

India began well thanks to Malik. He batted through the innings and the team chased the target in 32 overs with the loss of four wickets.

EX-INDIA COACH FOR JUNIOR BOXING SCHEME

NEWDELHI: India’s boxing federation plans to appoint former national coach, BI Fernandez, to supervise grassroots developmen­t. The Cuban was national coach for more than two decades since late 1995. The federatioi­n president Ajay Singh said the sports ministry has approved its proposal. India are looking to find fresh talent while the seniors face a busy 2018, starting with the India Open to be held in New Delhi from January 28. The Commonweal­th Games will be held in Gold Coast, Australia in April and the Asian Games in Jakarta in August-september.

HARYANA HAMMERS BEAT VEER MARATHAS

NEWDELHI: Runners-up of the first two editions of the Pro Wrestling League, Haryana Hammers kicked off their campaign in style by beating Veer Marathas 5-2 at the Siri Fort Indoor Stadium here on Wednesday.

Helen Maroulis and Harphool did the star-turn in the fifth and sixth bouts to take an invincible 4-2 lead. Khetik Tsabolov then rounded up the tie 5-2, beating Parveen Rana 10-0.

In the high-profile clash Helen beat Marwa Amri 9-1 by pin-fall.

In the most exciting encounter Amit Dhankar and Harphool ended the bout 5-5. However, it was Harphool who was adjudged the winner by virtue of winning the last point of the bout.

Earlier in the opener, Vladimir Khinchegas­hvili beat Shravan 7-3 to log in the first point for the Hammers.
