NEWDELHI: The Delhi government will start impounding commercial vehicles that have not obtained their fitness certificates from March.

“We have already identified around 36,000 commercial vehicles that have valid permits but no fitness certificates. We will very soon initiate action against them,” said KK Dahiya, special commissioner of the state transport department.

The list includes around 24,000 taxis, auto-rickshaws, gramin sewa vehicles and light goods vehicles and around 12,000 buses and trucks. “We will give them a period of 15 days within which they will have to obtain their fitness certificates. If they don’t, we will issue challans of ₹5,000. If they fail to respond in 10 days after that, we will seize the vehicles,” said Dahiya.

The transport department has started sending notices to vehicle owners and the process is expected to be completed by this week. The impounding process could start in the first week of March, officials said.

“The commercial vehicles are being considered as they operate more than private vehicles. An unfit commercial vehicle on the road could trigger more pollution and are more vulnerable to accidents compared to private vehicles,” said a senior official of the transport department.

L-G Anil Baijal was briefed about the matter by senior transport department officials in a meeting at Raj Niwas on Monday.
