GHAZIABAD: A 30-year-old man shot himself outside the house of his mother-in-law in Ghaziabad’s Loni on Tuesday night. Police said the man, who lived in Delhi’s Trilokpuri, had come to meet his estranged wife from whom he had been living separately for the past one year.

Sources said that on Tuesday, the woman refused to open the door or talk to the man that could have led to the incident.

Police said Pradeep Kumar, the victim, was in love with the daughter of his maternal aunt (mother’s sister), Shabina. As Pradeep and Shabina were cousins, both families were against their marriage. However, three years ago they both eloped and got married against the wishes of their families.

After the marriage, martial discord slowly crept in as both families continued opposing the match. For the last one year, Shabina had been staying at her mother’s house in Loni and never went to her husband’s house in Delhi. Police said that Shabina’s marriage was recently fixed elsewhere and Pradeep wanted to meet his wife after coming to know this.

The family of Shabina told police that they got a divorce rom Pradeep a year ago and hence her marriage was being fixed elsewhere

“Around 10pm on Tuesday, the man reached his mother-inlaw’s house and called his wife and in-laws. But no one from the family opened the door to let him in. Upset with this, Pradeep pulled out a countrymade weapon and shot himself in the head. His in-laws later informed police,” said Durgesh Kumar Singh, circle officer (Loni).

Pradeep, who was a sculptor by profession, died on the spot after sustaining a bullet injury. His in-laws told police that he had made two previous attempts to take his wife back and had once earlier even slashed his wrist when Shabina refused to accompany him back home.
