NEWDELHI: Maharashtra and Delhi stamped their presence in the Gymnastics Hall at the Indira Gandhi Stadium, each winning two of the six gold medals on offer in gymnastics at the Khelo India School Games but would willingly cede the limelight to Bavleen Kaur who claimed Jammu and Kashmir’s first medal across 16 disciplines.

In winning the silver medal behind Delhi’s Mehakpreet Kaur in the rhthymic All-around final, Bavleen Kaur (KC Public School, Jammu) became the first athlete from India’s northernmost state to win a medal.

Shayan Sharma, who studies at the Guru Har Kishan Public School near India Gate, boosted Delhi’s gold medal tally by dominating the floor exercise with a solid routine.

Maharashtra’s twin gold came through Mahesh Sanjay Gadhave on the pommel horse and Purva Vinay Kirve on the uneven bars.

PUNJAB DOMINATE JUDO

Punjab’s judokas dominated the boys section making a clean sweep of all three gold medals at stake in the 66 kg, 73 kg and 81 kg classes. However, the honours were shared evenly in the girls section, Haryana, Manipur and Gujarat picking up one each.

As the judo competition came to an end, Haryana topped the medals tally in judo with a haul of three gold, one silver and two bronze medals, while Punjab were right behind in second place with three gold and two bronze medals

MIZORAM MEET PUNJAB

Mizoram underlined their class thrashing Delhi 5-0 in the second football semi-final to set up a high-voltage clash with Punjab in the final to be played on Thursday.

Host Delhi’s defensive strategy backfired as they were trailing within the first three minutes of the game with Mizoram’s winger F. Lalnuntluanga finding the back of the net with a thunderbolt left-footed strike from outside the box.

Mizoram will now meet Punjab in the final. Punjab beat Haryana 3-1 in the first boys semi-finals on Tuesday.
