NEW DELHI: A 45-year-old woman was killed on Saturday evening after an iron rod from an residential underconstruction building fell on her head and pierced her skull in Rohini Sector 21.

The victim, identified as Darshana Vinayak, was a Sanskrit teacher in Indraprastha International School in Pashchim Vihar and stayed in Rohini Sector 21, police said.

According to the police, the freak accident happened around 5 pm on Saturday when Vinayak was walking home after dropping her son to his tuition class in Rohini Sector 21.

An investigator said that the incident took place two houses away from where the boy’s tuition teacher lived.

“The iron rod was among many objects that were kept on the fourth floor for the construction of a column. The labourers at the scene were preparing to pour reinforced concrete on the iron rod. Suddenly, one of the rods came loose and pierced the woman’s skull. It then got lodged in her body and remained stuck,” said the police officer.

The rod was 15-foot-long, and around half an inch in thickness. Police said that while plunging from the fourth floor it had gained enough momentum to penetrate the skull which led to the immediate death of Vinayak.

A few passersby gathered at the scene immediately after the incident and raised the alarm. A call was made to the police control room around 5.15 pm, said the officer.

The woman was rushed to a located hospital where she was declared brought dead. Her body was later sent for a postmortem examination, which is likely to be conducted on Sunday.

A case under Sections 304 A (causing death by negligence) and 288 (negligent conduct with respect to pulling down or repairing buildings) has been registered at the Begampur police station against unknown people.

DCP (Rohini) Rajneesh Gupta confirmed that the accident had happened and a case was registered.

Police said they were not sure how the iron rod had come undone and will question both the owner of the premises and the contractor.
