Road rage: Cops release sketches of 2 suspects
NEW DELHI: The Delhi Police on Monday released sketches of two of the four suspects, who had allegedly shot dead 44-year-old property dealer Vinod Mehra in a case of road rage on a flyover in northwest Delhi’s Bhalswa Dairy last Tuesday. Police are yet to make a breakthrough in the case.
The sketches have been prepared using the physical description of the suspects shared with the police by Mehra’s 15-year-old nephew Kunal, who was with him when the incident took place. The suspects were allegedly travelling in a white Maruti Eeco van with the words “Alisha” and “Gujar” written at the back of the vehicle.
Sagar Preet Hooda, joint commissioner of police (northern range), said the sketches were prepared by the crime branch officials, who are doing a parallel probe in the case. “The sketches will be released in the public domain through newspapers and news channels so that the suspects can be identified and arrested soon,” said Hooda.
A police officer associated with the probe said there are around 30,000 Eeco vans registered in Delhi. During the probe, the ownership of all white Eeco vans was established and their movements during the time of the crime were verified.
Investigators then narrowed down their focus on around 100 vans, which either had “Alisha” or “Gujar” written on them. The location of the owners of seven to eight such vans were found in Alipur and Bhalswa Dairy area. Officials, however, said the questioning of the owners did not yield any result and the probe was back to square one.
A crime branch officer said they were collecting data of mobile phones that were active in the vicinity of the crime scene where Mehra was shot dead. “We will now analyse the data for leads,” said the officer.
Mehra, a resident of Geeta Colony, was returning home from a wedding when the incident took place around 2.30am last Tuesday. An argument erupted between Mehra and the men in an Eeco van after he objected to their rash driving. The men then chased his car on GT Road and blocked it.
A man emerged from the car and pointed a handgun at Mehra. An altercation ensued and the gun went off, shooting Mehra in the chest. He was rushed to Sant Parmanand Hospital where he was declared brought dead.
