NEWDELHI: A 24-year-old woman was allegedly thrashed by a group of three or four men when she objected to their misbehaviour in northwest Delhi’s Mukherjee Nagar in the early hours of Saturday.

While the victim put up a fight forcing the attackers to flee, she was injured during the attack. She was treated at a hospital and discharged later the police said.

The attackers were yet to be identified till Sunday, an investigating officer said, adding that they are scanning CCTV footage from the neighbourhood.

According to the police, the victim, a native of Arunachal Pradesh, is pursuing her MBA from a private college and staying at a rented accommodation in Outram Lines in north Delhi.

An investigating officer said the victim was walking back to her home from a friend’s place at around 2 am on Saturday when a man removed the cap she was wearing.

“A man was standing in the lane while the victim was passing by. He misbehaved with her by pulling the cap she was wearing. The victim protested, but the suspect continued to misbehave with her,” said the officer.

When the harassment continued, the victim, who claims to be active in sports in her college, fought back.

“When the suspect was unable to take on the victim alone, he called two-three of his friends. They started beating her, yet she took them on,” said the officer.

The noise woke up the residents of the neighbourhood, forcing the suspects to flee.

The victim then called the police and a team was rushed to the spot. She was taken to a hospital.

Aslam Khan, deputy commissioner of police (north-west), said a case of assault, wrongful restraint and sexual harassment against unidentified suspects has been registered based on victim’s statement and police are on the lookout.
