NEW YORK: South Africa’s Kevin Anderson bagged only the fourth title of his career with a three-set victory over Sam Querrey to claim the ATP Tour New York Open on Sunday. Anderson played flawlessly in the third set tie-break to win 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7/1) in two hours and 13 minutes, ending Querrey’s hopes of a title on home soil. The 31-year-old Anderson -- who lost in the final of the US Open in New York last September -- expressed delight at bucking a trend which has seen him lose in 11 finals before Sunday. “I’ve been to quite a few finals and if it doesn’t go your way its pretty tough to deal with,” Anderson said. “It means a lot to me that I was able to come through it today.”

KYRGIOS WITHDRAWS

DELRAY BEACH (USA): Nick Kyrgios has withdrawn from the Delray Beach Open because of a right elbow injury. Kyrgios was hurt in Australia’s Davis Cup loss to Germany two weeks ago, and he withdrew from the ATP event in Rotterdam last week. He had been training in Delray Beach the past few days. “I was working hard to be able to be fit and healthy, but my elbow needs more time,” he said.

YUKI UP 11 PLACES

NEWDELHI: Yuki Bhambri jumped 11 places to stand just outside the top-100 bracket in the men’s singles rankings, following his run- ner-up finish at the Chennai Open Challenger tournament. With this jump, Yuki is now ranked 101 and is followed by Ramkumar Ramanathanm (140, +1), Sumit Nagal (216, +1) and left-hander Prajnesh Gunseswaran (242, -1). Yuki had achieved his career-best rank of 88 in November 2015. In doubles, Rohan Bopanna (20) and Divij Sharan (42) were unchanged but Leander Paes lost two spots to be placed 49.
