SDMC plans picnic spots at local parks
NEWDELHI: The residents of south Delhi will not have to go too far in search of recreational places to enjoy their weekends. The Municipal Corporation has decided to soon change neighbourhood parks in their jurisdiction into picnic spots.
These ‘picnic parks’ will have something for everyone, said Shikha Rai, leader of house, South Delhi Municipal Corporation who had proposed the project in her budget speech.
There will be a provision for cafeteria, musical instruments, play areas for children and adults, artificial water bodies, gazebos and other facilities, which are usually not present in neighbourhood parks.
“While the popular picnic spots are crowded, specially during holidays and vacations, these parks will remain available for those interested in having a day out of fun and frolic,” said Rai.
The civic agency is in the process of identifying big parks (above two acres) for developing these recreational spaces. “We will ensure that these parks are not located in the middle of residential colonies otherwise locals will be affected by the movement of public here,” said Rai.
Special attention will be given to parks on the main roads so that outsiders can also access them. “We are also thinking of converting the parks in busy markets as recreational spaces on public private partnership basis. It will help increase footfall in markets as well,” said an official.
On pilot basis, parks in Greater Kailash-i (located near inner Ring Road), Defence Colony, Saket and Punjabi Bagh will be developed as picnic parks.
Basic services such as provision for toilet complexes, security guards for safety, enough lights, dustbins and sitting areas will be arranged.
