NEW DELHI: A 40-year-old man allegedly stabbed and injured his wife and minor daughters, before turning the knife on himself in south Delhi’s Sangam Vihar on Friday evening, police said.

The man, identified as Jitendra Bahadur Singh, died on the spot while his wife and daughters, aged 11 and 6, have been admitted to a hospital with stab wounds to their necks, Romil Baaniya, deputy commissioner of police (south)., said.

Singh was apparently fed up of his poor financial condition that might have prompted him to take the extreme step.

Police said Singh lived with his wife, Meenakshi, and two daughters, Deepika and Roshni, in a one-room flat in Sangam Vihar and worked as a clerk-cum-advo- cate at a lower court in Delhi. He had of late fallen to hard times.

“His family has told us that they had been unable to pay rent for the last five-six months. The financial problems had left Singh frustrated,” said the DCP.

The incident came to light on Friday afternoon when a neighbour visited the family’s flat to meet them. “When several knocks did not yield any response, the neighbour peeped in through a window to find blood on the floor of the house and all the occupants lying motionless,” said an investigator.

The neighbour then alerted the police after which the door, locked from inside, was broken down. “Inside the flat, the four members of the family were found lying with cuts to their necks. They were immediately rushed to a hospital, where the man was declared brought dead,” said the DCP.

Meenakshi and her daughters were treated for deep wounds to their necks and their condition was now stated to be stable, said the DCP. “One of the surviving girls said that their father had stabbed them in their necks before turning the same knife on himself. No outsider was involved,” said the DCP. The police have registered a case of attempt to murder and are waiting for the survivors to recover .
